Winter Grass: The Crochet Version

A couple of weeks ago I came across Mochimochi Land. I immediately fell in love with Anna's knit plush designs. On Thursday night last week, I was in a crochet mood, but I wanted to make some Grass. So I printed the free pattern and converted it into crochet, which only took a couple of hours. And I figured since I had done all the work anyway, I might as well offer it to the designer to share with others!

So here is the crochet alternative!

Winter Grass: The Crochet Version

Finished size: Approx. 7" tall

Materials:
Felt-able wool yarn [I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease (3oz/85gm, 197yds/180m): #180 Forest Green Heather. I did not felt the end piece, but it should work fine if felted.]
US Size F Hook (3.75 mm)
Tapestry needle
Embroidery thread and needle or beads for eyes
Polyfil for stuffing
Gauge: Doesn’t really matter, but your stitches shouldn’t be too tight or loose

Crochet Abbreviations/Stitches:
Ch: chain
Sc: single crochet
Dec: decrease ([insert hook in next st, YO, pull up 1 loop] twice, YO, draw through 3 loops on hook)
Joining with Sc: Make a new slipknot on the hook. Insert hook in desired stitch, YO, pull up a loop, YO, draw through 2 loops on hook: sc formed.

Row 1: Ch 33, sc in second ch from hook, 1 sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (32 sc)
Row 2 and all even rows unless otherwise indicated: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in first sc, dec, sc in each sc across to last 3 sc, dec, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. (30 sc)

Finishing: Weave in loose ends. Felt pieces by running them through a washer and dryer. After felting, embroider on each eye by “drawing” a circle in backstitch and filling it in with satin stitch. (Beads can also be used for eyes, though not suitable for small children.) With right sides facing, sew two sides of body together using whipstitch, leaving opening large enough to flip piece right-side-in. Flip piece right-side-in, stuff with polyfil, then sew rest of opening together.
